What is DLC coating exactly?
DLC stands for Diamond-Like Carbon, a thin layer of material applied to the surface of a knife to improve its surface properties. While it’s not real diamond, it shares many of the same qualities – especially hardness and durability.
How thin is the DLC coating really?
A human hair is approximately 70 micrometers in diameter – which means the DLC layer is about 20 to 70 times thinner than a human hair.
Main advantages of DLC coating:
-
High wear resistance – The surface is extremely difficult to scratch, making it an excellent choice for hunting knives.
-
Corrosion protection – Moisture and harsh environments have minimal impact on the blade.
-
Low friction – The blade "glides" more easily, which is especially useful when slicing meat or other soft materials.
-
Black finish – DLC gives the blade a stylish and tactical look.
DLC coatings are primarily used for tools, as well as in the automotive and medical industries.
Currently, there is no better coating on the market for knives than DLC, particularly due to its exceptional hardness and wear resistance.
